Life’s Reflection

Hazel M. Talbert was born in Kansas City, Kansas on October 15, 1926 to the holy union of Courtney Anderson and Edith Anderson.  Hazel was the oldest of 3 children (Louis and Maxine) born to Courtney and Edith Anderson. Hazel had another brother Leon, and 3 sisters: Barbara, Betty, and Hortense.

Hazel converted to the Catholic Faith through her friendship with Regina LaSalle Barger. She joined Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where she received the sacraments of: Baptism, First Communion, Penance, Confirmation and Holy Matrimony. During her years at Our Lady of Perpetua Help in Kansas City Kansas she was an active member of the church especially working with youth. Hazel and her friend Regina started the Bluebirds and Campfire Girls Program at the church in 1952. Later in life she moved her membership to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Kansas City Kansas where she continued to be actively involved within the church community.  Hazel attended Dunbar Elementary School, Northeast Jr. High School (class of 1942) and Sumner High School where she graduated in 1945.  Hazel was married to Ernest Scott, Sr. (who preceded her in death).  They were married and had one son Ernest Jr. often referred to as “Scotty”.  Hazel was devoted to the growth and development of her son and provided many opportunities for him to excel in life.  Hazel and her son moved to New Mexico during his middle school and early teen years.  Hazel retired from Research Medical Center in Kansas City Missouri after being employed there for 20 years of services.  Hazel began her employment with Research in housekeeping when she retired she was Supervisor of the Housekeeping Staff.  Hazel took great pride in her work and in training those under her she believed very strongly that no matter what job you have you are to do it right and take pride in what you do.  Hazel was very solid in her faith which she demonstrated in her daily life she believed strongly that one should serve which she did in the following manner: Cancer Action Incorporated  (she made lap blankets, caps and other items for people with cancer undergoing radiation and chemo treatment), she was awarded the Selma Calene Award, Whilemina Gill Food Kitchen weekly cooking and serving meals for over 15 years, singing in the Blessed Sacrament Choir, member of the Church Ladies Altar Society, Legion of Mary, attended ACCW meetings throughout the State of Kansas, she worked with the Office of Black Catholics in the early days of their establishment. Hazel was the financial secretary and treasurer for Young at Heart.

Hazel served as a Precinct worker and supervisor for the Wyandotte County Election Board for 31 years, and received the Kansas Presidential Election Award in November 4, 2008

Hazel served as the Treasurer and Financial Secretary for the Tenets Association of Glanville Towers and she was the Financial Secretary of the Sumner Alumni Class of 1945 Anniversary Committee.

Hazel also knew how to enjoy live and have fun. Hazel loved to fish she would fish everyday if she could, she loved to play Bingo with her church group every Thursday they called themselves “the Young at Heart”, she enjoyed playing cards with her friends and at the Glanville Towers they had a weekly card game going. Hazel enjoyed spending time with her family and friends especially holidays and birthdays. If you knew Hazel you knew that she had a wealth of interests and knowledge: she loved studying birds, growing flowers and plants, going to the Opera, Starlight and the dinner theaters, the Nelson Art Gallery, the Farmers Market on Sundays for beignets and coffee then leisure strolls throughout the market purchasing fresh produce, traveling and most of all participating in good debates and discussion about world events and history over a good cup of coffee.

Hazel became ill suddenly on April 13th and was admitted to KUMC where she remained until her death on April 19, 2016 when Our Father in Heaven decided that it was time she went home with him and sing in his heavenly choir of angels with her friends and family that have preceded her in death.

Hazel Talbert leaves to mourn the ending of their time with her in this life and to celebrate her entering into a new life with God and His saints:  Ernest Scott Jr, son, Regina Singleton, goddaughter; Alex Barger Jr., godson; Emma Barger Ridley, goddaughter; Gregory Barger, godson; Eugenia Marie Houston, granddaughter, Ernest Scott III, grandson, Michael Scott, grandson, Renee Marie Edwards, great granddaughter, Sherman Judie, great grandson, Eugenie Marie Judie, great granddaughter, David Isaiah Houston, great grandson, Joshua Able Houston, great grandson, Nahshon Israel Houston, great grandson, Tyrese R. Lloyd, great grandson, Kelys Mychael Scott, great grandson Ke-May Ann Scott, great granddaughter,  Keymi Scott, great granddaughter, Emma Scott, great granddaughter  Michael Barger, Christopher Barger-Cameron, Catherine Barger Gorman, Alexis Barger- Ridley, Louise Anderson brother (KCMO); Hortense Newson sister (KCMO), Betty Ann Patterson sister (KCMO), her brother Leon Anderson and two sisters Barbara Reese and Maxine Pruitt  preceded her in death. Hazel also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and friends to mourn her loss.
