Dell Gene Godbold was born April 3, 1941 in Kansas City, Kansas to Anna Mae and James Godbold. He was preceded in death by both parents, and brother, Willie Godbold.
His education began at Stowe Elementary. He attended Northeast Junior High, and was
a graduate of Sumner High class of 1959. He then attended Wichita State University,
where he received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree. He furthered his studies at the
Kansas City Art Institute, and Scottsdale Artists’ School.
Dell united in marriage with Shirley Gibson, and remained in marriage until 2008. From
this union two children were born, Mark and Marla Godbold.
He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Eight St. Baptist under the
leadership of the late Reverend I.H. Henderson. He later united with Salem Baptist
Church.
Dell was the founder of Godbold Graphics, Inc. He was an exceptional illustrator and
aggressive entrepreneur. He served on the board of Greater Kansas City Chamber of
Commerce, and on the boards of the State of Missouri Chamber of Commerce,
American Heart Association, the Andrew Drumm Farm, the Black Economic Union, the
American Royal, and the Urban League. He was also a member of the Mayor’s Corps of
Progress and the Metropolitan Entrepreneurs Council.
He leaves to cherish his memories two children, Marla Newberry (James) of Colorado
Springs, Colorado, and Mark Godbold (Melonie) of Olathe, Kansas; brothers, Grover
Edwards III of Kansas City, Kansas, Derrick Edwards (Angie) of Kansas City, Kansas,
and Terrance Edwards (Trish) of Shawnee, Kansas; grandchildren, Hallie Godbold and
Tysen Godbold of Olathe, Kansas, Aleia Newberry, Jaelyn Newberry, and Brandon
Newberry of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and
other relatives and friends.
