Life’s Reflection

Chester Victor (Eugene) Powell passed away on Thursday August 9, 2016. He was 60 years old. He was born on April 10, 1956 in Kansas City, Kansas. He was the 8th and youngest child of Robert and Doreen Powell.   He confessed his faith at an early age and was baptized at King Solomon Baptist Church.  In 1967, became a member of First Baptist Church.  He was married briefly to Audrey Chapman of Springfield, Tennessee.

Chester graduated from Sumner High school in 1974. From high school he joined the United States Army where he served for 6 years. In the army he was a member of the Honor Guard and it was there that learned to be an air traffic controller.  In 1981 he began his employment with the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller. He worked in various places during employment such as Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tyler, Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana.  He retired in Monroe, Louisiana after nearly 30 years of employment. 

Chester loved his mother and supported her financially in her final years.  He loved Sumner High School and the class of 1974. He loved college football.  He always made sure he went to the Bayou Classic to see Grambling and Southern play.  He loved all kinds of music.  He was a collector, he collected baseball caps, record albums, cars and more.

Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Doreen Powell; and his sister Teresa Smith.

He is survived by his siblings, Brenda Gradford (Samuel) of St. Louis, Missouri; Vivian Powell of Austin, Texas; Robert Powell Jr. of Kansas City, Kansas; Clyde Powell (Janra) of Elgin, Texas; Frederick Powell of Kansas City, Kansas; Bruce Powell (Debra) of Seattle, Washington; and Celeste Powell of Shreveport, Louisiana; who was like a daughter to him and a host of nieces and nephews.
